About Me

John Gatti
I created SpaceTribe Candy in 2007 as I was writing my undergraduate thesis paper at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. The art began with combining alien and robotic forms dressed in west African ceremonial garments-- Embracing the idea of a primitive but timeless alien “SpaceTribe”. When I moved to New York after graduation, I continued those themes in the form of hundreds of quick figurative creature drawings and images of interlocking geometric patterns reminiscent of tribal patterns. Inspired by modern science fiction, outsider art, and West African ceremonies, these drawn images explore issues of the human condition: It’s origins, myth, ritual, warfare, and spirituality.
